why do we open a salon?
Chat about all aspects of running a salon business.why do we open a salon?
by Tom » 25 Jan 2011 05:06 pm
Hello everyone!
I need some help. I am conducting a research among those from the haircare/spa industry who have decided to open their own salon and need more data. From what I have gathered so far, the most common reasons are:
A). I worked at someone else's salon and now I want to start my own. It's a natural direction one's career goes.
B). As a manager I earn more money than as a stylist.
C). So I would have more time for my family or myself.
D). To pass on my skills and knowledge to others.
E). Different reasons?
I would be very grateful if someone decides to drop a line on the subject
Or just choose one or more from the list above, if that was your case.

My answer is D.
Most people I think do it because they feel they could do better than where they currently are, but usually are wrong. Owing a salon is not all it is made out to be. Being a great hairdresser doesn't make you a great owner. It takes a real business sense to make it in this industry as an owner, and that is the one thing lacking in our training as stylist, we are never taught how to run a business. I think if more people knew then they would be more content with a position as a stylist.

OK I am no hairdresser, but starting a business for this reason is just wrong
If you want your business to succeed - at least in the short term, until you have everything in place for it to "run itself" - you will spend all the hours of the day (and a lot of the ones at night) working/thinking/being excited/worried about your business.
Which answer(s) are the results pointing towards so far?
Website design and internet marketing for hairdressers and hair salons.

A & B are neck and neck
with D following them not too far behind
could use some more input though for a more reliable statistic

thanks for your post!

I don't know that I can provide you any statistics other than gloomy ones for start-up businesses. But from the passion in your post, it seems like you will really regret not taking advantage of an opportunity to own your own salon. You have the right frame of mind of progression and developing others which is critical in our field. I say take a shot!
I have been getting a lot of request for clip in hair extensions. Is anyone else seeing this?
