General Hair Colouring Questions
and Techniques

Hi Evereyone, I have recently gone back to hairdressing after a 10 year break so I am re-learning so to speak, I have been colouring a clients hair for a few months, using wella koleston 5/0 doing her roots every 6 weeks, but what has happened now is that she has a build up on her lengths and ends and is too dark, she wanted some red streaks in it to tone it down, but I cannot get any red to take, I have tried using some goldwell shades, mahogany, dark mahogony, garret and aubogene with 20 vol peroxide and not one of them is taking! what am I doing wrong here ? Is there too much build up or should I be using higer strength peroxide, can anyone help?

Hi Sam32

If your client has already got tint on her hair then your trying to lift tint on tint. The result you get will be very suitable. Either try pre- lightning the hair first then applying the red or try using Wella Magna which is great for achieving reds, burgundy's and blondes without pre-lightning first. It works by first pre-lightning then deposits the colour. Only down fall is the reds tend to fade quite quickly but it's not the product as much as Reds just fade fast.

Hi!
Clients can suddenly spring new ideas for colour on to the stylist. You can help yourself by NOT running the colour through to the ends each time you tint the roots. That is what is causing the build- up. Only run through when the ends have faded. With a 5/0 it should not be necessary every time. When the ends have lifted naturally apply a red designed to lift tint OR use a stripper first in foils or packets. If you want to bleach use a low peroxide to avoid too much lift - ideally you want a dark orange base for your red. Good luck !!
