Im the yougest employee in my salon...only 19. Our age ranges in employees are 19, 21, 35 and 51. My clients range anywhere from 3-85. I feel with me being so young some of my clients and co workers dont take me seriously. On the other hand a few of my mid 30 clients like me cuz im "young and fresh" they always tell me to make them look like they are in there 20s...

I remember when I was "young and fresh".
Wish I was still young and fresh.

My Salon ranges from 25-44, me (the owner) being the oldest. I find that when I refer to myself as " one of them", then they expect that. So when it comes down to management issues, they look at me in horror and shock, like "I thought you were one of us?": type situation. Do you ever run across this?

You must tell them that you wear many hats on any given day...manager, stylist, wife, friend, female,,,,,, etc

When you need to manage..show them you putting on your manager hat. It changes the scenario a bit. When your management job is done, take that hat off. You need to learn to separate the two and they need to learn how to accept the difference.

Just like I have here at the forums. I am a mod/admin and I am one of you guys also. I joke and laugh with you guys but if anyone steps out of bounds, I then have to put my mod/admin hat on and stop the nonsense. I just try to do it very nicely.

I am 37, and I just left a salon where I was the youngest! They were from about 48 to 60, and the oldest of them acted like she was about 10 with all her trivial talk and babbling on and on about her goofy self all day, was very immature and caused tons of caous! She made other stylist as well as clients uncomfortable, yet the owner just lets it continue, in wasnt even directed towards me personally most of the time but I couldnt take it anymore so I left. I have worked with some really good, really young stylist, they are hip and full of energy and ideas. As long as they keep the conversations in front of the client at a professional level you will have nothing to worry about.
