The most important rule for a new hairdresser
by chris the limey 2 Years, 1 Month ago
Hi all,
What would you say in your experience is the most important rule/pearl of wisdom that you could pass on to somebody just starting out in our industry?

My own pearl would be, "Cutting hair is a great career but it's like driving a car when you begin. You'll have lots of ideas and questions about the way in which your instructors teach you to do things. Don't disregard a thing that you are taught though. If you cannot listen long enough to do something in the exact manner your instructor requires, how on earth will you ever manage to do it for your paying clients? Pass your test before you decide you know better."
Those of you who have been styling hair for a while or have ever had the opportunity to train an over-confident newbie will know where I am coming from with this.

I'd love to see what others feel would be the one most important pearl of wisdom they could offer a new stylist? Just one.

This is an old thread but I thought I'd add a reply...

ALWAYS CHECK WHICH BOTTLE SAYS NEUTRALISER AND WHICH SAYS PERM LOTION BEFORE YOU APPLY THE NEUTRALISER

That's based on my own personal experience of my younger days!

That's a good one Chris, I have seen that done too.
Mine would be 'learn to LISTEN,keep ears open and mouth shut unless you have a question or an answer you are confident is the the right one.'
ANother, yes, we may be old crumblies in your eyes, but we do know a thing or two, so save the rolling eyes.

Always stand correctly. Use your tools with the proper hand postions. Or you get a sore back and shoulders.

Always double check the color tube/bottle before mixing to make sure the box and tube match.

(old crumblies? lol)
when consulting with your client-standing in front of them and looking directly at them is more welcoming than looking at them from your mirror while standing behind. watching their body language as they speak-where they put their hands in their hair as they talk etc. can reveal a lot to you about what they want in a haircut/style.
