Face Shapes
by jazz 2 Years ago
This question was inspired by the article:

10 TOP TIPS TO PROVIDE A 5 STAR COLOUR SERVICE

It talks about face shapes.

How many of us really truthfully do this with repeat customers?

You have been doing lucy for 3 years now, have you gone back and re consulted her face shape? Has she lost wieght? gained wieght? Did she get surgery done on her face?

I have a few books on this and have taken a couple of classes but I still find myself skipping over this part of the consultation at times.

Food for thought

Its true Jazz, its easy to get complacent with clients, oh... its Mary she has this exact color and that blow-dry every week, and the sad truth is that she has probably worn the same style for over 20 years. Although everyone gets older and has changed - their color and style might not have.

Do you think clients ask for a style that used to suit them when they were in their prime of life ? if that's true do you think that they belive that just by keeping the same style they can hold on to their youth too.

Sometimes I wonder if clients have to actually go somewhere else to get an honest consultation.

Imagine if you were a dressmaker and a client bought the same dress year after year for 20 years from you - as a dress maker, do you have a duty to suggest a more contemporary design or styling ? or would you turn a blind eye and let her walk out dressed as a 70's child for ever, and carry on taking the cash.

Jazz I think all clients deserve the same attention to detail that a new client recives - after all an old client has spent more over the yeras so why should she make do with less ?

All it would take is... Mary, I've was thinking about you last night. I was thinking maybe we should change your fringe (bangs) slightly, make it more feathered. What do you think Mary ? ... Over time you can go from there and slowly introduce Mary to a fresher and complementary newer look and one that brings out the new Mary.

Have to admit Jazz, I'm 50/50 on this one.

I'm normally pretty good at face shapes although I don't always tell my clients why I'm doing something. It's pretty intinctive to me.

But...sometimes I do just think, is it fat at the top or fat at the bottom?

We have a girl working with us who has lost 4 and a half stone over 8 months! It's unbelievable. Everyone is commenting on it and she's done it without cigarettes, drugs or vomiting.
She's been on the Rosemary Connelly diet and has transformed from podgy permer to stylish stylist. Her face has gone from round to heart shaped and I'm thinking she should change her hairstyle.

One face shape I always have difficulty with is small square faces - you know - slightly overweight people with small foreheads, small noses and small chins but four definite corners to their face. What would you say is the best short, medium and long hairstyle shape for these people? I'm always worried they'll end up looking like that swimmer from the orginal 'Posiedon Adventure' (the large woman with ash level 7 hair).

I have to jump in the shower before work here, but would like for someone to give examples of what they do to highlight the good qualities in each face shape? What are the angles you use for each face shape. What would u suggest for a very overwieght round face (double chin and no neck) but with a really high forehead?

Thanks for your input

Hey Chris, been thinking about this.
In My Feng shui hair book is says to:

A shortcut should be layered with fringes sweeping to one side. The cut should have a horizontal round shape to counter the vertical, square shape to lenghten the face.

Medium to long cuts with a graduated fringe in front creates movement to offset the square shape.
A vertical cut line will offset a horitzontal jawline and make the face appear slimmer.
This face shape can wear a side part or middle part.

Now for coloring, If the client comes in wanting a new look with cut and color, I myself cut before I color. Color placement is the key for a total complete look.
Here is what you would do for a coloring for the square face.

Keep the outside corners of the fringes darker or a solid color. Add highlights at the center point of the forehead

but there is so much more to take into consideration. Body shape is one. Skin coloring is another.
And they say our job is easy..
