hey guys I'm new to the site and have really enjoyed reading all your posts. A few of you sound like you are old hands at this forum thing and are pretty good mates. I've been in hairdressing 7 years since leaving school and have been at the same little salon in my local town all that time. The thing is it hasn't done me any good as I'm stuck in a rut and being a more traditional stylist than a modern stylist I'm petrified of moving somewhere new!! Can anyone give me any advise on how to go about grabbing the bull by the horns!! Its my own fault for staying there for so long but time flys and I really liked it there. cheers x x x

Hairdresser01~ first off, welcome to the site. Movtivation comes from within. Not much we say here will get you anywhere. It comes within you to do it. So you say you like where you are at but feel you are stuck in a rut. Are you tired of the salon or tired of the same faces? Or are you tired of the same ole styles... Do you go to classes? Hair shows? How controversial is your salon with new styles and colors? Are you always trying out new things? I have worked at my current salon for 11 years. I work with a younger group for the last 5 years, which makes me stay on my toes. I would not want to go anywhere else. Things are good there. Yeah, i get in a rut..then i get off my butt and go to a salon hair class, whether retailing, business , cutting or coloring. It puts the spirit back in my creavity. Or I just log on to this forum and start chatting with others and reading posts. LOL the grass isn't always greener on the other side.

Hi, as Jazz says, it's all down to you. Set yourself some goals. Make a six month, 1 year &5 year plan. Book a 3 day class at Sassoon or Toni&Guy.or a L'oreal class for cut and color. It's not the size of the salon that counts , its what is in you. Resolve to improve your skills, get some models in one night and do color. You took the first step writing to us.

Thanks for the advise guys and I know what you mean. It is up to me but its easier said than done. I really love my job but to answer your questions jazz I'm tired of the same old faces and the same old styles and the same old winging problems. The small town I work in is not very trendy or fashionable. We only live 12 miles from a city but the difference is huge. I live in the city but am not an overly confident city slicker!! I practice funky stuff on our junior and my sister and mates but because i'm not doing it every day it doesn't come easily!!! Also I've been doing traditional cutting and colouring for so long I find it hard just to let go and ignore the rules that have been deeply instilled in me since my training. I feel creatively frustrated!!!

Yep it is easier said than done. Takes will power and williness to take the steps. LOL..i had to laugh at this... Quoted Text Also I've been doing traditional cutting and colouring for so long I find it hard just to let go and ignore the rules that have been deeply instilled in me since my training. I know where you are coming from. These "disconnected" haircuts just about did me in. For the first dozen or so cuts i did on clients, they ended up being a blended cut. But trust me when I say..you can teach a old dog new tricks. I have been behind the chair for 25 years or so now and love to learn new things. I have taken the "I can't do it" sign off and really am enjoying pushing myself to new levels. Because god forbid that I am actually known in the salon as the "old" hairstylist. It sounds like you should go to these city salons and get a feel for them. Go in, talk to the stylists, owners etc. See if it is really what you want. You Go girl!! You can do it!! Jazz~

Take a look on eBay for the Tigi Freestyle DVDs. You will get them for about £20. They have cuts and colours galore and will give you some new found inspiration. I was like you once, but looking back I have to say that the best salon I ever worked in was the little village salon I began in. Big salons in big cities are very 'cliquey' and believe me, after seeing some of the ways they operate you will be highly disappointed. There is a lot of hype and even bigger ego's to get past. In the city you will become a very small fish in a very large sea. If you can eduacte yourself through DVD's, books and experiments you will become a shark in your village. You will build a reputation and strong clientele. If you ever hope to open your own salon you will find that helpful. When you leave a city salon you will be instantly replaced. Put it this way, when your friends who go to "Big City Salon" come back, what's the first thing they tell people? Not the name of the individual stylist, that's for sure. It's the name of the salon. Nake a name for yourself, not somebody elses business!
