One of the biggest cock-ups I ever did (luckily to a [s]friend[/s] ex-friend who dumped me afterwards, was a set of cap highlights with bleach when I was severely hungover.
I was very young at the time and skipped as many corners as possible to get the job over and done with so i could just go back to bed and lie down.

Shoulder length hair PULLED THROUGH A CAP! Bleach with 12%! That's not all...they still weren't lifting fast enough (for me in my hungover state) so i put her under a hood dryer and went for a sit down before I threw up. uke

I fell alseep. So did she (must have been the heat and fumes under that hood dryer).

The highlights were barely visible when I finished blowdrying her hair because THEY HAD ALL SNAPPED OFF! :o

There was the occassional white highlight still attached, but as I was blowdring the hair they were just stretching as I pulled my brush before falling off and landing in her lap. As you can imagine there was a look of horror in her eyes mixed with the most heart wrenching tears I've ever witnessed. :'(

I still feel extremely guilty to this day.

A funnier cock-up also happened when I was very young. I had a client who loved me: middle aged woman, alcoholic, lost her son named Chris in a motorcycle accident years before. Really sad.
Anyway, she always had bleach with 6% as an all over colour (natural base 5) but it never came up quite light enough. Well, I had just learned my colour theory and knew that I needed to apply a violet tone to counteract the remaining gold.

So one day I asked her if I should apply the toner, explaining to her that it would make the blonde beautiful. When she agreed I mixed a permanent level 10 violet tone colour and applied it all over. Left it on for the regular permanent colour processing time (35 minutes). Well, you can imagine what happened can't you?

Pre-Bleached hair - permanent colour - violet tone - 35 minutes development!

Her shoulder length previously blonde hair was friggin' blue! :LOL. The thing was, she loved me too much to care and convinced me that she loved it and left the salon with a smile and a hug. And yes; she returned as usual 6 weeks later for her regrowth (didn't book the toner though LOL)!

By the way, for any students on the board, when applying a toner over bleached hair you should use semi-permanent colour and leave it on for between 1-5 minutes only!

I can't believe that I'm the only one who has ever made mistakes! C'mon guys...be honest. You must have made some errors while you were still learning!

was working in my first salon and chatting away with this girl. was ready to trim her front fringe and had recently learned some techniques with the texturizing shear. i picked up a section and with correct finger placement, degree of angle and full of self assurance snipped the section. then i realized as all of the hair above finger tension fell off into my hands... i had picked up the straight shear instead of the texturizer. luckily she had plenty of hair to comb over that almost bald spot i swiftly created for her. she was really nice about it but for some reason never came back to me.

Mine was a few years ago and it was an extention service.

The woman came to the salon for a consultation for extentions. She wanted to have the consult in private (that should have said ding a ling to me).

It turns out she wears wigs, no reason just lazy. She was a hairdresser and the wigs were bloody obvious nylon looking scary buggers. She insisted no one knew, yeah right.:crazy

Her own hair was cut short on top and so I told her her hair needed to be at least 8 inches long on top. So we took details and color match, and she went off to grow her hair.
Six months went by and she called up ready to order the hair. I asked her to come in,to let me see the length, she said she did not have time and her hair was grown and just wanted me to order the hair.
Against my better judgement I agreed.
She asked if I could do them after hours (wig, noone knows etc) so I agreed to do them Sat after we closed.
She comes in and whips off her wig, aaaarrrrggghhh, her hair was 3to4 inches on top.
ME"I thought you told me you grew your hair?
HER " I did, I just cut this bit on top for height"
hhhmmm!:blahblah:blahblah:blahblah

I said that it was too short and she starts weeping and sobbing wants long hair, it's not fair, I paid all that money blah blech.
So I started to put them in.
4 hours later I had Joe Dirt in my chair.

I took them out, refunded her and said bye bye Miss American Pie.
I know the refund was questionable but I did not want my name on that.
Lesson learned? They lie, don't listen and always do a consult.
I turn away all extention requests with hair under 10 inches.NO EXCEPTIONS.

YIKES-i would've charged her something for your pain and suffering.... i mean time....

Well I must say that I feel better now knowing that it isn't just me who made some mistakes through the years.

Luckily, our mistakes are few and far between. The successes are much more common!
