Hi

I would ask her what she would charge you for monthly rent. Then go back and figure out your cost of operation(supplies), your est. monthly income and rent.

To me..if you are self employed, you should be making the most money correct?
not the owner of the building.

Ask her what she is going to supply for you in ways of supplies (perms, color, shampoo etc.) for the 60%.

A straight 40% and she provides all of your Supplies, Clean Towels, A Place to work, Liability and maybe even new clients...? What is your retail commission?

Sounds pretty good to me. It may be different in the UK though.

If your not prepared to rent and cover all of your overhead, a commission is a good place to be for awhile.

Go back... look at your book in the last year and add up what you brought into the salon each week...which weeks were slow, which were fab and see what you might be getting into. Be sure your retaining your clients...are you booking them ahead?

If you were to rent, what would your weekly rent and supply costs be?

Hi Ste,

I would say 60 / 40 is a very good deal.

Your boss is paying the rent, council tax, electricity, gas, waste removal, water charges, sewerage charges, telephone, cleaning supplies, window cleaner, insurance, repairs and renewals, maintence charges, cleaning provisions, tea, coffee, towels, tools and consumables, supplying the washing machine, dryer, the peroxide, the colour stock, foil, bowls, brushes, trollies, chairs mirrors "the salon" etc etc etc.

You are getting the benefit of her salon with no responsibility or liability. If you are any good you should make plenty of money. My self employed staff don't get that much commission, but they earn £250 - £400 per week. It's not the commission rate you should look at, it's what you are doing to promote yourself and create your own income. You did say you were self employed! - so YOU have to take responsibility for your own wage.

On the point of recommending retail.

I like my clients to be able to look good for 4-6 weeks not just for one day. When one of her friends asks ... Who does her hair ? ...I'd like it to be a compliment as her hair looks good because she is using the right care and styling products, rather than her hair looking a mess and it;s an enquiry so they know who NOT to go to !!!

If you're not recommending retail, you are doing your client an unprofessional dis-service. How do you expect your client to style her hair at home if you don't inform her the products YOU have HAD to use to archive that style ?

Some stylists think they are selling, when in fact, what you are doing is advising your client of what to use. Then it's the clients choice if they want to recreate the look you have created for her.

Unless of course you only use fresh air and water. In which case that's all I'd supply you with for you to create with. Think that's harsh, well how harsh are you being leaving the client with the same choice ?

So if you want be seen as helpful and professional then at least have the decency of telling her what you are using, how to use it, how much to use, then if she does want to take it home with her then she can, because its available in the salon.

I hope that answers your questions. If you need to know how to increase your business then there's a wealth of information on the site and you only have to ask.

Hey Orange and SophieA:

Isn't it when the owner supplies everything, it is a commission base job?

The owner was offering a 60/40 for Self employment??

Which does not make sense to me.
For commission based..yeah sounds great!
