I am new to the website
by Amy830 3 Months ago
Hi! My name is Amy and I'm new to this site. I have been a hairdresser for about 15 years. I have a weird question.... has anyone heard of hair burning? I had a new client that was referred to me and her old hairdresser in Utah did this hairburning thing. I guess while the hair is wet she takes small sections and twists it then runs the lighter along the little pieces that are sticking out. It sounds super crazy to me but she swears by it and really wants me to do it. I'm up for new things but I'm a little nervous, I don't really feel like burning someones hair all off. If anyone has any insight on this I would love to hear about it.
Thank you!!!
Amy

Hi Amy.
Welcome to the site. There are some great stylists and salon owners who visit here. You'll find them really friendly.
The hair burning is something I have heard of before, but have never attempted it.
My understanding of it is that you twist the sections of the hair, just like when doing a regular split ends removal, but use a lighted candle to remove the stray or split ends.
They say that it seals the hair, but I'm not really sure if that is true.
If you try it, let us know how it went.

Hi, Amy.
I like to welcome you too. I am 3 weeks late but as we say here in Greece: "better late than never"
As for the burning of the hair i hear it all the time by old hairdressers. They do it to cut split ends but i have never seen it...
In my opinion something that we used to do and we don't anymore... well there is got to be a reason.
But i am also willing to know if anyone has try it.

Hi Amy, welcome.

As for the hair burning, I have had this done by a wonderful older Italian hairdresser and tried it a few times myself on clients that requested. He did it with a candle rather then a lighter and on dry hair. You take a small section of hair and twist it down from the root to the ends, twist it really tight, and gently run your finger UP the twist to bring out the split ends better. Then you quickly run the flame over it and the run your finger down over the twisted section. You don't go near the scalp, just mids and ends.

It smells really bad! [burning hair] so I would recommend doing it outside. He also said they do this only during the dark of the moon on long hair and then trim long hair during the full moon.

Was it worth it? Well I still like the way Chris explained it, using scissors instead of a flame and then a good conditioning treatment under the dryer. But I always love to try old and new techniques at least once.
