debating chair rental E-mail
Hi, my name is Anne.  I worked as a hairdresser in a city for 8 years and now moved back to the small town I grew up in (population ~2000). Over the past 8 years I had the same boss and worked at Supercuts & FCH. They have neither salons close to where I am now.  My question is, I was offered a chair rental position, for $100 a week but since I just moved here and don't know a lot people she said she would only charge $50 a week for the first 2-3 months. I really need advice. I wasn't going to do it at first, because being self employed scares me plus not having much of a clientele! But the owner is being very persistent, and I'm thinking maybe I should just give it a shot and maybe this is a good opportunity for me..? What do you think? Advice, tips, & how it works, I would like to hear it all THANKS!!

Go for it...
Three years ago I felt the same way. I had worked in chain salons for so long and deciding to rent a chair was a very scary thing. The owner started me off ay 75 dollars a week for one month and the next month she went up 25 dollars until I got to 150.00. Now my clientele was not that big and i survived. Its the best thing I ever did the shop that I work in is in a great location but the owner does not advertise well so we rarely get walkins so now i am thinking about leaving and i thought about going back to a corporate salon especially with this recession but i know i won't make as much money...i know once you do it you will love it

It isn't the salon owners that are responsible for advertising. You are. Get out there on your downtime and get yourself known! Give your clients referral cards to hand out to their family and friends.
You are a self employed business owner. You are the only one that will make or break your business.
